IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) Basics
IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) is the standard protocol used for communication between an email client (such as Outlook or a mobile app) and an email server, allowing the client to remotely access and manage messages stored on the server.
1. Core Principle: Server Synchronization
The main feature of IMAP is that the original mail copy is always preserved on the server, and the client only displays a synchronized view of the server's content.
① Server-Based Access
- Mail Preservation: Any changes a user makes (reading, deleting, moving to folders) are reflected on the server in real-time.
- Partial Download: The client does not download the entire mailbox; it only fetches essential parts (headers, subject lines) first. The full message content is downloaded only when the user opens the email.
② Multi-Device Support
A user can connect from a desktop, smartphone, or tablet and see the identical mailbox state and content across all devices due to synchronization.
2. Comparison with POP3 (Post Office Protocol version 3)
IMAP was developed to overcome the limitations of the older POP3 protocol.

- Large Mailboxes: Allows quick viewing of large mailboxes without needing to download all content upfront.
